Welcome to the seventh edition of Vientianale International Film Festival, which will run from 22 to 26 March. Daytime screenings will be held at the Lao Cinema Department and nighttime screenings will be shown at Walking Street, Vientiane’s new outdoor recreation area on the Mekong riverside. All screenings are free and open to the public.
We are excited to announce this year’s programme of 40 feature and short films from around the world. In Love Forever you will see a Lao love story against all odds, in Assassin an action thriller about a female assassin in 9th century China, in Cinema Travellers a documentary about the love for cinema in rural India. With the award-winning films My Life as Zucchini, The Red Turtle, Boy and the World and April and the Extraordinary World, we shine a spotlight on the art of animation filmmaking. With Baby (A)Lone, we offer you a story about growing up in Luxembourg, with Sing Street we follow a young boy’s journey towards love through music in 1980s Ireland, with Captain Fantastic we witness one family’s struggle for happiness in the United States of America. In addition to these and many more outstanding feature length fiction and documentary films, we will screen two short film programmes from interfilm Berlin, Germany’s largest short film festival and our longterm partner, one for adults and one for children.
On Sunday, 26 March, the last day of the festival, we will a record number of 41 brand new Lao shorts from our annual short film competition and award the winners. We are thrilled to launch six new award categories within the Vientianale Awards thanks to already established and up-and-coming Lao film production houses. We would like to thank our independent jury of Lao filmmaking and media professionals who had the tough job of selecting the winners among the many great filmmaking talents.
