Sabaidee & Welcome to the 2nd Vientianale International Film Festival

On behalf of the Vientianale Organising Committee, we would like to welcome everyone to your Film Festival. This community-led festival promises to be a memorable cultural event that will showcase films by local well established, alongside up-and-coming, filmmakers mixed in with some international offerings in Vientiane, Lao PDR.

The 2nd Vientianale will build on the overwhelming success of the inaugural event that was held in May 2009. This free event not only aims to entertain but also educate audiences about the potential richness and diversity of Lao film culture by presenting feature films, documentaries, films for children, music videos and short films. A supporting programme will include workshops on filmmaking and, of course, the big festival party.

A highlight of the 1st Vientianale was the Short Film Competition based on the theme “Laos - Happy Country” where more than 20 high quality short films were received. Of note, one of these short films, "My River" by Santhavy Phonvixay, was submitted into the 3rd Balinale International Film Festival (2009) in Bali, Indonesia and won 3rd prize! Furthermore, four other short films will be shown at the Cologne Off 2011 (Videoart in a Global Context). Following this success, we will be continuing the Short Film Competition in the 2nd Vientianale that will be based on the theme: "Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow".

Furthermore, a new and exciting competition for the 2nd Vientianale will be one aimed for young people. The Rising Star Award will be presented to the best short film made by a young person on their mobile phone based on the theme "We are the Future!"

All competitions are open to everyone. So whether you are a seasoned professional or someone who just has a story to tell, why don't you just have a go!

We all look forwards to presenting you with the 2nd Vientianale International Film Festival to a screen near you.
